Korean Savings Account Conditions: We Counted All 236 Products and 61% Had None

2026-07-29Full count of the 2026-07 FSS disclosure5 min read

Shopping for a Korean installment savings account means running into conditions immediately. Spend this much on a card, set up that transfer, tick something in the app. Plenty of people give up at this point, assuming the advertised rate is out of reach. What almost nobody does is count how many products actually attach conditions. So we counted all of them.

Key takeaways

Of the 236 twelve-month installment savings products in the 2026-07 disclosure, 143 (61%) had an identical base and maximum rate, meaning no conditions at all. Where a margin does exist it averages 0.74 percentage points, and 22 products carry a margin of 3 points or more. If conditions put you off, the field of condition-free products is wider than the advertising suggests.

Conditions are rarer than they look

Pulling every 12-month installment savings product from the 2026-07 Financial Supervisory Service disclosure and removing duplicates leaves 236 products. Subtracting each product’s base rate from its maximum rate gives the preferential margin. A margin of zero means you receive the advertised rate without meeting any condition.

2026-07 Financial Supervisory Service comparison disclosure, 12-month installment savings, counting rows with the same institution and product name once. The margin is the maximum rate less the base rate.

143 products, 61% of the total, carry no conditions. The products that dominate advertising are the ones with wide margins, but numerically they are the minority. It is the familiar illusion of assuming the visible sample represents the market.

The other tail deserves attention too. 22 products carry margins of 3 percentage points or more. In that range, failing a condition changes the outcome entirely. They share the name savings account with everything else but behave like a different instrument.

Which conditions appear most often

Classifying the disclosed condition text by type gives the following. Products frequently attach several conditions, so the counts sum to more than the product total.

Counted by matching the wording of the disclosed conditions. The final column distinguishes conditions that require spending or committing money you would not otherwise have spent.

Automatic transfers lead the list. For most people this costs nothing, since the money moves from an account they already hold. First-time customer conditions are also common, and they resolve before you apply: either you qualify or you never will, which at least makes the arithmetic simple.

The conditions worth scrutinising are the ones that cost money. Partner card spending requires a monthly outlay, and opening an additional product ties up funds elsewhere. If the extra spending exceeds the interest gained, the preferential rate is not a gain.

2026-07 disclosure, before tax, 12-month installment savings where the base and maximum rate are identical. Eligibility and monthly contribution limits differ by product, so confirm on the institution’s own page.

These pay the stated rate with nothing required. Compared against the headline maximum of a conditional product they look modest, but compared against that product’s base rate the ranking often reverses. Where meeting conditions is uncertain, the condition-free option can deliver more at maturity.

One caveat: no conditions is not the same as no restrictions. Some of these limit eligibility by age or region. Conditions and eligibility are separate fields and both need reading.

Is failing the conditions actually costly

Numbers settle it. Taking monthly contributions of KRW 300,000 over twelve months:

The highest condition-free rate is 5% at 세람저축은행 (펫밀리 정기적금), producing KRW 97,500 in pre-tax interest with nothing required.

The highest conditional rate is 14% at 웰컴저축은행 (웰뱅 라이킷(LIKIT) 적금), against a base of 2%. Meeting every condition yields KRW 273,000; meeting none yields KRW 39,000.

Simple interest, fixed monthly contributions, twelve months, before tax. Monthly contribution limits are not reflected.

If you can genuinely meet the conditions, the conditional product wins comfortably. The trouble is partial compliance. Meeting half the conditions does not produce half the margin; each condition carries its own fixed increment. Comparing on a rate that includes only the conditions you are certain of is the only approach that matches reality.

A working order

Read the base rate first

The base rate is what you receive having met nothing. It is the floor, and starting there removes the possibility of disappointment. As the distribution shows, plenty of products have a perfectly reasonable floor.

Separate conditions you cannot influence

First-time status, age and family circumstances are determined by facts, not effort. Sort those first and the list of conditions you can actually act on shrinks considerably.

Cost out what remains

A card spending condition of KRW 300,000 a month means KRW 3,600,000 routed through that card over a year. If that is spending you would do anyway the cost is zero. If it is incremental, weigh it against the interest, remembering that installment savings interest is roughly half what the headline rate implies relative to total contributions.

Check the contribution ceiling

Wide-margin products often cap monthly contributions tightly. A high rate on a small permitted balance produces little cash. Rate and ceiling have to be read together.

TIP. Read the full condition text in the disclosure rather than the summary. What looks like one condition is often several sub-items, each with its own increment stated. Adding up only the ones you will actually meet gives you the rate you will actually receive.

Frequently asked questions

Do Korean savings accounts without preferential conditions exist?

Many. Of 236 twelve-month installment savings products in the 2026-07 disclosure, 143 (61%) had identical base and maximum rates, meaning the advertised rate applies with no conditions.

Which condition is most common?

Setting up an automatic transfer, attached to 39 of the 236 products counted. It usually costs nothing, since the transfer comes from an account you already hold.

If I meet half the conditions, do I get half the margin?

No. Each condition carries its own fixed increment, and you receive only the increments you earn. The disclosure lists the figure attached to each sub-item.

Is a card spending condition worth meeting?

If the spending is what you would have done anyway, yes. If it is incremental, compare it against the interest earned, bearing in mind that installment savings interest is about half what the headline rate suggests relative to contributions.

Should I prioritise the base rate or the maximum rate?

Compare on a rate that adds only the conditions you are confident of meeting. Where that confidence is low, the higher base rate is the safer choice.

Sources and basis · Product counts and condition classifications come from downloading the Financial Supervisory Service comparison disclosure for 2026-07 and counting every 12-month installment savings product, treating rows with the same institution and product name as one. Condition types were classified from the disclosed wording and may differ from each institution’s own categorisation. Interest figures use simple interest with fixed monthly contributions over twelve months, before tax. Confirm eligibility, applicable conditions and contribution limits in each product disclosure.
